Make it news

Journalists are banned from the Nuba mountains. This makes it extremely difficult for International media to cover the war and it’s impact on civilians. Nuba Reports brings together local journalists with professional editors and mentors in order to produce verifiable and compelling dispatches from the front lines.
But for the model to work, we need your help. Make this hidden conflict visible. Make it news.

About us

Fighting broke out in June 2011 between Sudan’s government and Nuban rebels. Nuba Reports was founded by people living in the region after journalists and NGOs were banned. Our goal is to provide Sudan and the International community with credible and compelling dispatches from the front lines of this conflict and to illuminate the war’s impact on civilians. more

“We all ran to the bomb shelters but Kodi got scared when he heard the bombs falling and got up and started running,”

Two people were wounded when four bombs struck a primary school for orphans in Kauda on Thursday, May 16. The bombs – dropped from a Sudanese Air Force antonov – struck the Father Cliff Primary School for Orphans around 1:45pm, while students were taking their lunch break.

Nine year-old student Kodi Butros Yagub was struck in the leg by shrapnel from a bomb, which landed around 60 meters away. Another man – 26 year old Bakri Adam – was similarly struck in the leg while walking by the school.

Students – and virtually every resident in South Kordofan – are taught to lie flat or seek refuge in a fox-hole during bombings. But teacher Simon Jubatta says Kodi was caught in the open when the bombs fell. “We all ran to the bomb shelters but Kodi got scared when he heard the bombs falling and got up and started running,” explained Jubatta. Neither Kodi’s nor Bakri’s injuries is life threatening, but Kodi was immediately taken to the German Emergency Doctor’s hospital for treatment.

The Father Cliff Primary School is supported by Make Way Partners, a United States-based Christian organization.

Just before the bombing in Kauda, the Antonov dropped four bombs in the village of Kumu. The four bombs killed 20 year-old farmer Juma Abdalla. Abdalla was in his house when the airplane flew over the village.  He stepped out of the house and one of the bombs hit the side of a nearby, hill sending out a piece of shrapnel which cut off both of his legs.  He was rushed to the hospital and died the next morning after losing massive amounts of blood.
